Two Awesome Ideas!!

1st: Item Categories

Just like everyone else I like to post profits on a variety of items. My log personally has a ton of random items on it. I rarely look beyond the first page of anyone's log because it's too time consuming to look through pages and pages for a certain item I am interested in. I think it would be really neat if we had the option to categorize a players items into separate categories for easy viewing of only items were interested in looking at.

There are currently about 1200 individual items from rs linked to Merchz. By making togglable categories I think that everyone would benefit, it would allow people to look into different categories only they are interested in. I also think that peoples logs would get a lot more views, especially the forgotten pages of items that nobody looks at anymore; they would be easily accessible if you could separate them somehow.

This could be easily done just like how the items are separated on the Runescape forums.
Possible categories could include:
Armour
Weapons
Treasure Trail Items
Discontinued Items
Food, Farming & Herblore
Crafting, Construction, & Fletching
Ores, Bars & Runes
Summoning & Divination
Miscellaneous
Maybe even separate them more?

2nd: Pie Charts

It would be really cool to add pie charts to everyone's personal log showing the different item categories. This could be easily be done if my first idea was to be added. Pie charts could show profits made in the different categories, and there could even be another high-scores for the person with the most profit in each category!! Maybe Weekly/Monthly high-scores? Not to forget the people that choose to post losses, if you could toggle the pie chart to show where they are losing the most money would be helpful too!

I think that people would enjoy both of these options!!
Support? YES!!

Super cool idea, could work similar to choosing the type of merch (short term investment, active flip, street trade) and then at the top of the list of logs there could be a 2 drop downs, 1 for organizing by type of investment and other by type of item.

I also think the Pie chart would look wonderful in the Analytics section, Sam's gonna have a lot of work to do when this goes through.

Haha right!

I'm starting to regret these labs due to all the work but there's amazing ideas! We already have the capability to sort items by category admin side but we never got around to it due to the labor it requires. We might be able to look into outsourcing it like we did the limits Moved to approved.

Hey BigD

We're currently looking into which item categories we would like to use.
Some of the suggestions you've made are clear, but others make little sense, like Divination & Summoning for example, which have nothing to do with each other.

The problem with categories is depth, how far do we want to split them up? There are definitely divided opinions about this, some people may want to go as far as splitting up per skill, while others just want a few basic categories.

Personally I'd like to keep things simple, so I propose the following 7 categories:
  1. Discontinued Items
  2. Treasure Trail Items
  3. Weapons
  4. Armour
  5. Supplies (stuff made through skills that you can consume, like food, potions, ammo, runes, pouches)
  6. Materials (stuff gathered through skills that still needs processing, like logs, raw food, bones, hides, ores, seeds, herbs)
  7. Miscellaneous (anything that is left)

What do you guys think?

It makes perfect sense!!! The reason I chose these exact categories is because they are the same ones that are used on the Runescape forums. If you check under marketplace it lists them in that order.

I think it would be easier for people to find stuff using these 9 categories because they are the same ones that people are already using for buying and selling through the RS forums. I would probably stick to simple categories right away and see how people like them. If there are requests to go further in-depth that could be another project to work in in the future.

But I can't disagree with you that Summoning & Divination have nothing to do with one another. Its just Jagex way of grouping things I guess... We can be different and group things together that make more sense like you have suggested.

What kind of categories does anyone else suggest?

Yeah I looked at their categories too, but they are so inactive in general anyways that keeping things in line with them doesn't have much added value.
